SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

LEADERSHIP TRAINING

We, here at Southern Dreams, believe cultivating the next generation of leaders begins during the teenage years.  Through our Youth Leadership Program, teens are educated about our community, assisted in developing leadership skills and inspired to get actively involved in their community.

 

  • Teach the significance of, and need for, youth at all ages

  • Teach the basics of the grant-making process

  • Teach leadership skills associated with collective decision-making

  • Empower the participants to achieve a direct impact in their local community.

   Southern Dreams, a non-profit program,  has many components that are geared to support and help the community in every way.  Some of our programs are: Learn to Earn Career Graduation Program, Youth Behavior Program, Prep for Success Development Program, Teen Pregnancy Program, Leadership Program, and Community Youth Outreach Program, Youth Justice Program.  The second part is the Southern Dreams At-Risk Mentoring Program that is geared toward addressing the problems that often lead to students getting expelled or dropping out of school and/or getting trapped in the juvenile court system. The third component is Prep for Success Development Program which is designed to develop adults and young adults for college and job readiness skills to assist adults and young adults in job search.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

AND ADVOCACY

 Trough our Community Outreach and Advocacy Program (COAP), Southern Dreams builds its relationships with area service providers in order to provide more comprehensive resources to youth in many communities. Southern Dreams offers trainings, workshops, and case consultation services for community-based, social service, legal service, and advocacy organizations. Southern Dreams has a large list of organizational partners to meet all need to help any community move forward.

  

 Southern Dreams, along with Orion High on-line, The University of Mississippi High school on-line program offer a Digital educational program to high school students, in a effort to reduce the dropout rate in Mississippi and other States. Our program gives young adult learners  the opportunity to earn a high school diploma. SD works together with students, parents, public school districts and community organizations in order to help high school seniors and young adults that are still in high school or have dropped out of high school a chance to receive a high school diploma. SD partner schools are SACS accredited private school. However, students must have the required credits and meet all our graduation requirements in order to receive a high school diploma.

Southern Dreams,  along with Healthy Homes Mississippi offers  a program that will  help the  pregnant teen to receive the education services they need to help them receive a high school diploma as well as help the new teen and expectant teen parent strengthen their families' functioning and reduce their risk for child abuse and/or neglect. The program is a prevention program that works to improve the safety of children while providing support to the family.

Youth  Justice Program

We provide the youth and the parent with  insight concerning the laws of the youth court system as well as the youth rights and make sure that the youth is getting a fare opportunity to be heard in all matters.

Southern Dreams,  along with partnering Mental Health and Human health agencies, endeavors to reduce alcohol, tobacco and other DRUGS (ATOD) ,delinquent activity and recidivism. Proposed activities include evidence- based treatment strategies, and quality training and conferences to educate communities on different matters that would leave hardship on them.

Art & Craft and 

After School Reading Program

Southern Dreams,  along with  Mississippi Cultural Crossroads, offers educational services, art & crafts  of all  kinds as well as a youth media program that is design to help youth in the area of media production, digital photography and music production.

 Prep for Success Career Pathway

Southern Dreams,  along with Alcorn State University Extension, offer a Career Pathway program. The Career Pathway Program is a series of connected education and training programs and student support services that enable individuals to secure a job or advance in a demand industry or occupation. Career Pathway focuses on easing and facilitating student transition from high school to college.

Prevention and Mentoring/Services

Mental health counseling

With our counseling services,  you can find a skilled experienced therapist,  who has helped clients identify and explore those issues that may be getting in the way of a more rewarding home life and career, or of more fulfilling relationships. The goal is to help provide the clients with the insights and tools they need to move beyond old, limiting beliefs and behaviors.

DRUG SCREENING


 

Southern Dreams work with a toxicology laboratory to administer drug screening for youth. Home, Office, and Court visits are available.

The primary objective of the prevention/mentoring is to give individual youth the resource and the opportunity to be self-sufficient, cope with anger problems and learn a better way of handling their problems as well as becoming high school graduates and productive citizens
